Disaster can strike quickly and without warning. Therefore, your best defense against disaster is pre-planning. The following are recommended actions that may assist in keeping you safe during various types of potential disasters:
- Communicate a home escape route to each family member keeping in mind that physically challenged individuals may need assistance or a special escape route.
- Establish and agree on a “meeting place” that is outside of your home in case of an emergency.
- Each home should have a minimum of 2 (two) smoke detectors. Remember to check operation and batteries at least every six months.
- Establish an outside contact person who can provide you with information and/or relay messages as needed.
- Assure a 3-day supply of food and water for each person within the household at all times.
- Identify a standard location to keep a flashlight and extra batteries.
- Obtain and keep a portable radio with extra batteries in a standard location.
